It’s Through Connections by Zina Hermez
My career as a writer began when I sought after learning from professionals. I joined an online group called Fellowship of Christian Writers where I met authors who mentored me. Through friendly emails, classes, webinars, and a lot of self- study, I’ve been encouraged to write. I believe God puts people in our lives at the right time for His purposes. Nothing happens by mistake when you walk by faith! I wrote a lengthy email expressing my desire to get published, how I was writing a book about an accident I was in that left me paralyzed as a teen, and how I’ve overcome it even though it changed my life. My post was public to a group of more than five hundred members.
I got a quick response from the well-known author Terry Whalin, an editor, and past keynote speaker of the Breathe conference. He kindly reached out and gave me a link to sign up for his Write a Book Proposal course if I was interested. As a longtime educator, I was a dutiful student and completed it successfully. Terry and I became friends, and I followed other “movers and shakers” in the industry. This time my life changed for the better! I began a spinal cord injury blog and my book, Not Without God: A Story of Survival was finally published in 2014.
I chose to attend the Breathe Conference for the first time because I’m also a Michigander. Although Breathe is on the west side of the state and a bit of a drive – I like that it’s a modern group with quality speakers implementing new ideas and how we can apply them. Now I’ve written numerous articles, brochures, blog posts, and attended out-of-state conferences.
The only barriers that exist are the ones you put up in your mind. Anything is possible! Writing takes hard work. I’ve spent many nights up late worrying about what I wrote and if it was good enough. I’m glad I took a chance. I’m glad I wrote that email. It’s something I will never forget. I’m not the kind of person who waits on dreams to happen; I make them happen. And people can change your life. It’s happened to me!
